Tour of the sewing machine

Most modern machines have a roughly similar set up. Some older or unusual machine may look quite different, in which case try dig out the user manual, or message me.

Machines are either computerised or mechanical. Computerised machines have a screen from which you select the stitches, and the length and width of stitch. They often have a large range of stitches but they are also a little more fragile so I don’t necessarily recommend them for beginners. On mechanical machines you may just have one dial to select the stitches which will then have length/ width pre-sets. This is a little limiting though. The next step up is one where you have a separate dial to adjust the length of each stitch. The one that also has a width adjustment is the most adjustable machine, but the middle option is perfectly fine for most people.

Other dial/ levers will include the reverse button and the tension dial. On some computerised machines you may have a needle up/ down button and a “stitch in place” button which finishes a stitch off just like a back stitch would. If you have anything else you don’t recognise from the video then please check the handbook or ask me.
