What will you need?

For this class you will need mostly a willingness to have a go, and to work along with the class.

  • You will also need, probably, a pattern, I prefer independent designers’ patterns. I would choose a simple woven garment and leave the fancy and the stretchy for another time
  • Enough cheap ish fabric to make up the pattern, and some more, to make mistakes on, to practice with, and not to be too precious about. £4/m fabric is a lot better to play with than £25/m linen!
  • Decent polyester thread. Coats Moon thread is great for practising with, Coats Duet and Gütermann Sew All is perfect for your final garment
  • Fabric scissors. They don’t have to be super expensive but they have to be sharp and used only for fabric
  • A rotary cutter and large cutting mat if you like. I prefer these to scissors but you need room to store the mat flat so think about where you will keep it
  • Some erasable pens in a contrasting colour to your fabric. Don’t go for specific fabric ones as they are often worse quality and more expensive than what they sell in stationery shops or even the supermaket!
  • Small thread snips or scissors
  • Sharp pins! I would never use pins without heads as I have seen what they can do to the inside of sewing machines! But make sure your pins are good quality. And a lovely pin cushion is SUPER useful
  • An iron and pressing mat or ironing board. No really you will need this!
  • A tape measure
