February 2020 musings |
I have seen the effect of the elections and of Brexit not just on my friends and family but also on business. I think everyone has been holding their breath and holding on to their pennies too. But now it’s all done, in the words of my lovely friend Rachel, we can start campaigning and making things better, both privately and locally and for some of us nationally or even internationally. My storming the barricades days are over but I absolutely am capable and fervently believe in making my home a happy home, and by home I mean my neighbourhood too, and my friends, and my students, and in whatever way I can do this I will. I always have to weigh up my desire to be alone and not attend meetings or be part of a group with getting stuff done and I feel the tension between just wanting to grow my plants on the allotment and hug my boys but to also not stick my head in the sand. I see local people who drive to Calais with a van full of clothes and food for the refugees living in fear and who are cold and hungry and I burst with admiration, and wonder why I can’t do this. Yet. Maybe it is still just too impractical being a single parent. Maybe I will never be the kind to drive the van, maybe my role is always the one to keep the home fires stoked and to keep knitting and keep the children and the cats (and the adults too!) happy. It’s a hard thing to work out, and very personal too. Anyway a long winded introduction to say I feel in a way some of the darkness and worry is lifting, I have seen the first daffodils in bloom and had my first coffee outside and I am also seeing more bookings and taking more calls. I have spent January trying to do yoga every day, a new endeavour for me, and have loved the days I have managed it. I have started cooking better food after slipping into (gluten free) toast at least twice a day for a few months. My man and I have just had a blissful week together full of adventures (of the London and mostly charity shop kind!), and life feels less on hold somehow. |
Classes There are new dressmaking classes on the schedule. These are perfect even for people who have only done a beginners class, as the sewing won’t be too challenging and the pace is slow enough for anyone to keep up. The classes are with a maximum of 3 people so plenty of time for questions and support! I am running a course starting on 7th March and a weekday one starts on 9h March. They run over three days and you will learn to read and adjust a pattern to fit and then you will learn to cut tour fabric and sew it together. It’s a great course, fun and satisfying! It will give you the confidence to tackle other simple garments on your own after. Book here: https://ticketlab.co.uk/events/cheekyhandmades ************* Zips! classes will teach you ALL about zips, the different kinds of zips and easy methods of putting them in. You will then spend the afternoon learning to make a fun zipped pouch in whatever size you want, with a lining and tabs for the zip etc. The class runs on 1st March and again on 16th March Book here: https://ticketlab.co.uk/events/cheekyhandmades ************** I am running more beginners sewing and quilting courses too, and of course am available for one to one classes too. ************* All class bookings are on: https://ticketlab.co.uk/events/cheekyhandmades |
